Becoming Vegan - Benefiting your health and your environment

Becoming vegan has many benefits for the animals, the general well being of our health and our environment.

All creatures on this planet have a right to life and freedom, and I believe that avoiding animal products is one of the most obvious ways you can take a stand against animal cruelty and be a true advocate of peace, love, equal rights and justice.

More then 150 billion animals are slaughtered every year for the food industry, and that's probably not even scratching the surface of the realistic statistics. I personally, and many other vegan activists and advocates (E.g. Gary Yourofsky) consider this animal slave-trade to be a 'holocaust' which is defined by 'destruction or slaughter on a mass scale'. This has been going on for thousands and thousands of years, in some cases due to survival, but overall we have been desensitised by 'speciesism' which stems for man made ideology, the first form hatred and superiority humans are taught.

Each vegan alone save's 100+ animal lives a year, as that is the amount the average meat eater consumes. Also, every year in the UK we feed our livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people, while in the world 30,000,000 people die of starvation, so the world becoming vegan could also save human lives as well as animals.

Becoming vegan also has a tremendous benefit on our health, as animal products have been conclusively linked to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, eczema, obesity, arthritis and many other chronic and deadly diseases.

Researchers have found that cholesterol (found only in animal products) and animal fat clog arteries, which leads to heart attacks and strokes. The British Medical Journal published findings from a study concluding that lifelong vegans have a 57 percent reduced risk of death from heart disease. Studies have also shown that vegans are between 25 and 50 percent less likely to suffer from many types of cancer, including prostate, stomach, pancreas, lymphatic, and other cancers.

Scientifically, carnivores have the acidic stomach juices they rely on to break down flesh and kill the dangerous bacteria in meat, that would otherwise sicken or kill them. Human stomach acids are much weaker in comparison, strong acids are not needed to digest chewed fruits and vegetables.

Also, carnivorous meat-eaters have an intestinal tract that is only 3 times their body length, so that rapidly decaying meat can pass through quickly before causing illness and disease. However, herbivores (Humans) have an intestinal tract of 10-12 times their body length which allows the body more time to break down fiber and absorb nutrients from plant-based foods. Meat actually begins to rot on its way through the human intestines, increasing the risk of food poisoning and colon cancer.

If you was to see a dead animal on the side of the road, would you be tempted to stop and eat it? Does the sight of a dead pig or cow corpse make you salivate?

If you answered “no” to these questions, congratulations, like it or not, you’re a herbivore and these symptoms say so.

According to anthropologists and biologists who study our evolutionary history and the human anatomy, humans are herbivores and are not well suited to eating meat. Humans lack both the physical characteristics of carnivores and the natural instinct that drives carnivores to kill animals and devour their raw carcasses.

Most humans are disgusted by the sight of blood, intestines and raw flesh, and cannot tolerate witnessing or hearing the screams of animals being killed or harmed. This bloody reality of eating animals is innately wrong to us, another indication that we were not designed to eat meat. This is the one reason why we leave it to the major corporations with slaughter houses, to deal with the dirty work, as the majority of meat eaters are to coward to do it themselves.

Remember that this information is only scratching the surface on veganism and there are hundreds of other reasons why this lifestyle benefits everything. Also remember that becoming vegan doesn't mean you are going to go without, there are plenty alternatives in health shops and supermarkets, in the vegetarian and free from sections.

Providing : mock meat based products. Dairy free milks such as hemp, almond, hazelnut, soya, rice and more. Dairy free butters such as sunflower, coconut, soya and more. Alternative treats, sweets and chocolates for those with a sweet tooth, or you can just choose from the abundant fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, roots, and grains that mother earth provides, all cruelty free.
